According to Tim Federle, the creator of the series, he expressed confidence in the conclusion of season four while speaking to Variety. He mentioned that Olivia was deeply involved in her songwriting journey, leading to a busy schedule. With the introduction of numerous new characters and the return of important ones, the show’s focus was shifting.

Federle felt that in the limited span of eight episodes, including Olivia’s character might have reduced their roles to mere cameos rather than meaningful narratives. He acknowledged that he did extend an invitation for her return, but the discussions never progressed far due to the need to develop new storylines for the evolving relationships within the show.

After season three ended, Federle hinted in an interview that it would’ve been really tough to bring her back for another season. She was super busy with her music career, so coming back like before wouldn’t have worked out the same way for the next season.
