Ecuador’s forthcoming presidential election: A man named Fernando Villavicencio, who works in the country’s national assembly, was hurt during an incident in the capital city, Quito, last Wednesday after an event.

He’s among the not-so-many people who’ve claimed that there are connections between organized crime and government people in Ecuador.

The President, Guillermo Lasso, mentioned that the reason for the attack was organized crime.

Ecuador used to be pretty safe and steady in Latin America, but crime has gone up lately. The increase is because of more Colombian and Mexican drug groups coming in, which have gotten involved with local criminal gangs.

Last month, Fernando Villavicencio got threats from a gang called Los Choneros. He was given protection because of that.

After he was killed, a video showed up on social media. In it, men with masks and guns said they killed him. They said they’re from Los Lobos, a rival gang to Los Choneros.

But later, another video came out. This time, men without masks said they’re actually Los Lobos. They said they didn’t do the killing and the first video was made by their rivals to make them look bad.

Both gangs are very powerful and cause a lot of violence. People in Ecuador are worried about this before the presidential elections on August 20th.

Fernando Villavicencio was married and had five kids. He was one of the eight people running for president. He wasn’t the most popular candidate, but he was in the middle of the group according to polls.
